A hard fought weekend against New England powerhouses UMass Amherst (#1) and Middlebury (#2) put UVM into the number one ranked position entering the National tournament! The games are set to be held April 15th at a TBD location.
A great comeback game on Saturday put UVM on top at 15-10. With only 16 minutes remaining, the very muddy UVM side was scoreless to UMass’ 10. Quick tries from Charlie Powell (‘10) and Robert Sokolowski (‘12) gained the lead with 5 minutes remaining. Jack Bates (‘11) went 1 for 2 on penalty kicks to secure the win.
Sunday’s game against Middlebury was surely to find success, as it was the third encounter of the Vermont clubs over the season. Momentum shifted back and forth over the course of the game, but ended in favor of UVM (#5). A pair of tries in the first half put Vermont ahead quickly, but was quickly shot down after 2 players were sent to the sin-bin after committing late hits. A penalty try accompanied the second yellow card.
The 12-10 score at halftime put the Burlington Boys in a slump because of their sin-binned fellows. At the start of the second half, Middlebury had trouble capitalizing on their 2-man advantage and were unable to score.
Although, after returning to full force, Middlebury Winger Ed Cahill was able to add 5 points against the side-line, making it 15-12. With a missed kick after the try, UVM rallied to put another score on the board by Justin Curtis (‘10) on a great overload! Jack put away the point-after securing a 19-15 win.
Middlebury, truly in a class of their own, showed great poise despite the loss. The great rivalry between the two Club is sure to live on!
UVM will face Mid-Atlantic #2 in April.
